Beautiful beaches, coconut palms, brightly painted fishing boats and rubber tree plantations – this is the typical tourist impression of South Thailand. Look behind these images though and you discover a place where many people are involved in spirit worship, gambling or alcoholism. The Southern Thai people are crying out.
Southern Thai people have darker skin than the average Thai. They speak a different dialect from other Thais which is fast, loud and to the point. Southern Thais are more direct than their central Thai cousins and more likely to tell you what they really think rather than have you guess or be uncertain. Proud of their culture and history, they feel independent and self-sufficient.
Theravada Buddhism is the religion of the majority of Southern Thais. Buddhism has been part of southern Thai life for centuries, and Buddhist practice and worldview are well ingrained in the culture. Despite this, there is also much fear of spirits and involvement in sorcery and ancestor worship. Only 0.45% of this people group are Christian.
OMF’s South Thailand Church Planting Team is committed to reaching the Thai Buddhists of South Thailand with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Together they are involved in primary church planting, English teaching, student and youth work, and leadership training. Where possible, they work in teams with other missionaries, Thai evangelists and local Christians.
